Lower back pain. How can I help you?

Lower back pain can be very debilitating.

According to National Institute of Health 8 out of 10 people will experience some type of back pain in their lives. 90% of lower back pain cases will improve. 50% will have a reoccurrence within one year. In my clinical experience and as an individual who has had low back pain with Sciatic nerve symptoms I can say if left untreated and without prevention each episode can be worse than the first. As a Physical Therapist, my duty is to provide the solutions to heal, prevent the reoccurrence and educate the community to avoid an incidence of lower back pain.

I am going to address musculoskeletal lower back pain which can be caused by three different anatomical structures, tissues or pathologies of the spine. Of course there are other disease processes that can cause pain and can be very serious in nature.

Muscle or ligament: these symptoms will be sprains strains or spasms.

Intervertebral Disc: in-between each vertebrae is a disc that helps with providing shock absorption, space or height between each vertebrae, the tissue that keeps the shape of the disc is a taught ligament like structure, this can weaken causing a bulge and possible tear, the material inside the disc (nucleus pulposus) can then protrude into the spinal canal and then may impinge a nerve.

Bony dysfunctions like Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Spondylitis and any other bony disease can cause pain.

When to worry?

If your pain is caused by significant trauma if you are having unrelenting pain especially at night, if you lose the ability to control your bowels and your bladder, if you are having numbness tingling or muscle weakness in the legs or foot like you are dragging the leg. Contact your physician immediately.
